LIZARD Banana Yoshimoto 180 pages, fiction from Pocket Books (1993) I dropped a bowl and broke it, which upset me so much that I burst into tears. Then I decided to sit down and read a comic, which made laugh hysterically. I was a total mess." Aren’t we all? These are the stages of book editing, more practical than official, all based on my experiences as a fiction author. I'm much older than I look, so, yeah, decades of real publishing experience. If you ask my nine-year-old daughter, she'll tell you I'm the same age as Meliodas of Seven Deadly Sins. Same size too. Anyway. 1. Lessons from Candy Crush Saga

I have been playing Candy Crush Saga created by King Entertainment for more than a decade now. Initially, I used the Android app on my Samsung tablet, then synced it up on FaceBook and eventually my Galaxy smartphone once the game left the platform. In a nutshell, Candy Crush Saga is a video game, specifically a match-three puzzle similar to the classic Bejeweled. It was released in April 2012 Read More

This is in response to one of the more common questions that bloggers are prompted with: What fictional character do you most identify with? Ever since I read her story in Elektra: Root of Evil, I saw myself in the Marvel Comics character Elektra Natchios. Here is a non-exhaustive list of commonalities, in no particular order: We are the only female child of our parents. (In my case, I Read More

Value yourself as a woman as you live and love. That has always been my adage in life and especially in relationships. Below are seven things I have learned as I make my way in adulthood and marriage, from my own personal experiences and those of friends. My life is definitely far from perfect, but I do believe it's been an awesome ride thus far. 1. Take care of yourself. Inside and outside. Read More

This month, I will be featuring a different romanc This month, I will be featuring a different romance book daily for 14 days, with 14 fun, interesting, random things about each book.

For Day 11, let's talk about my epic YA romantasy, 'River Meets the Sun,' which I co-wrote with my husband.

14 Things about 'River Meets the Sun' (Day 11, 14 Days of Valentine)
1. This is my first collab with my husband as well as his first book
2. The story is a 'clean' upper-YA epic fantasy romance, for readers 13 and above. This can be read and discussed in classrooms by older students.
3. Based on the founding myths of Peter's hometown, Anini-y, Antique, in the Philippines
4. The idea for this book was given to us by then-Mayor Pollicar of Anini-y back in July 2024, when we visited his office in Anini-y on our way to visit Peter's home village, Igtumarom. This book was dedicated to Mayor Pollicar and all the other wonderful folks who inspired the work.
5. In the book, Anini is a scholar-princess of the river kingdom of Tinigbasan, while Nogas is an orphan warrior of the mountain tribe of Kalisidlan
6. Their backgrounds were upgraded and fleshed out from the original myth of Anini being a passive royal beauty and Nogas being a somewhat impulsive yet determined slave/foreigner who fell in love with her
7. We introduced a rival prince for Anini's hand :)
8. Nogas primarily uses a spear to fight, similar to Uryana of my middle-grade series 'Fire and Tide.' My headcanon is that mountain tribes like Kalisidlan and Baraw use the spear not only for defense but also for hunting in the wild.
9. Filipino-Canadian actor Manny Jacinto is my face and body headcanon for Nogas
10. My favorite character in the book is Suba, an earth giant
11. Philippine mythical deities appear in the book, led by Suba and Kala, a mermaid
12. This book does not have a traditional HEA, so prep the tissues
13. There are other adaptations of this legend, but we wrote this book to be accessible to the global audience of the romantasy genre
14. The book has object and illustrated editions out in eb00k, paperback and hardback. A special-edition hardcover with dust jacket and all-new art has also been released.

Let's talk about my collection of heart-rending ro Let's talk about my collection of heart-rending romantic short stories, 'Until We Say Love.'

14 Things about 'Until We Say Love' (Day 10, 14 Days of Valentine)
1. There are 11 stories in the book. Each can be read as a standalone.
2. My favorite story is 'Bookshop Hours,' about a woman and a man who cross paths in a 24-hour secondhand bookstore/coffee shop.
3. I had the most fun writing 'Table for Two,' about a man and woman, both cheated on by their exes, who were forced to share a table in a restaurant after a booking mishap
4. If I had to pick one story for everyone to read, it's 'Days of Flowers,' about a woman who opens a flower shop after leaving the corporate life and a retired army officer who frequents the kapehan across the way. The leads here are my oldest FMC & MMC and I absolutely love them both to bits!
5. All written in 1st person POV, narrated by either the MMC or FMC
6. The most relatable story is probably 'Wrong Number, Right Love,' because the FMC is an exhausted, sassy PA who takes no bull and has body image issues
7. All of the stories take place in the Philippines, in various cities, but mostly Metro Manila and Iloilo City
8. A lot of the stories deal with the loneliness and isolation of urban life, and how a lot of people just want to be seen
9. The failed cryptocurrency venture named after 'mythical beasts' in 'Table for Two' is actually a real-world bitc01n scam that took the honest investments of so many OFWs in the Middle East
10. My favorite MMC is the Red Bull-guzzling Zeke in 'Wrong Number, Right Love,' who is actually a golden retriever with abs
11. My favorite FMC is Lila in 'Days of Flowers,' who left a high-flying corporate job to open a flower shop. A true Ghibli queen whom we all aspire to be.
12. My favorite side character is the judgmental cat who belongs to the neighbor of the FMC in 'The Light in the Window'
13. My favorite quote from the book is, 'To gangsta!' (If you know, you know)
14. My color scheme for the romance and discreet editions is white and earth tones, a change from my usual darker palette of book cover colors

14 Things about 'Love Meets Dark' (Day 9, 14 Days 14 Things about 'Love Meets Dark' (Day 9, 14 Days of Valentine)
1. There are five romances in the book. Each can be read as a standalone and in one sitting too :)
2. Some of the stories are in a shared world. For instance, the MMC in 'The Man in the Shadows' is the boss of the MMC in 'The Roommate Agreement'
3. Four of the stories take place in my hometown, Iloilo City, Philippines, although some locations are fictionalized
4. In this book, we have five different boyfriends: a reformed ex-con, a possessive billionaire, an exhausted grad student, a fiery journalist, and a silver fox cop
5. Written in 1st person POV. Some stories have dual POV while others stay with one of the leads.
6. I absolutely loved writing 'Sunsets in September,' which takes place in the town of Carles in Iloilo Province
7. The MMC of the poignant 'The Roommate Agreement' is one of my fave to write - he goes to school, has two jobs, and looks like J-Hope
8. The MMC of 'The Man in the Shadows' owns buildings in Megaworld and restaurants in Esplanade and Festive Walk in Iloilo City (no, he's not real)
9. The leads of 'The Roommate Agreement' love watching the Korean urban fantasy action series 'The Uncanny Counter' (one of my personal faves, of course)
10. The MMC of 'Rain Check' owns and runs an old, well-known convenience store at Iloilo City Proper (no, he's not real)
11. The MMC of 'Sunsets in September' is a Senior Inspector of the Philippine National Police, which is equivalent to the rank of Captain
12. The tropes in this book include sta1lker romance, cinnamon roll in a wolf's body, forced proximity, mistaken identity, second chance, and friends to lovers
13. The book has romance and discreet variants in ebook and paperback, both using a gorgeous deep gray and purple color palette
14. My favorite part of the book (very meta and self-aware):

“Oh my God. What are you, some kind of stalker CEO?” The words come out sounding more of a Wattpad fever dream than intended.

“Yes,” he says simply. “But only yours.”

From 1st Feb until Valentine's Day, I will be feat From 1st Feb until Valentine's Day, I will be featuring a different romance book daily, with 14 fun, interesting, random things about the book.

For Day 8, let's talk about my first ever holiday-themed romance, 'Season to Fall.'

14 Things about 'Season to Fall' (Day 8, 14 Days of Valentine)
1. If you need a reason to read this book, I have one word: stairs
2. The setting of the book is Iloilo City in the Philippines, which means gastronomical goodness
3. It's my longest standalone work to date, clocking in at 97k words
4. Part of the holiday-themed series, 'Holidays of Love.' This is the first and it has a Christmas theme.
5. In my sincere devotion to Yuu Yuu Hakusho, the MMC has the name of Kurama in the Filipino dub, Dennis
6. THE MMC is a former Taekwondo champion turned office messenger turned construction boss, so he has a lot of...stamina
7. The FMC is an OFW who has been working in Dubai for ten years
8. The FMC's full name is shortened to Lilli, which leads to stargazer lilies becoming a recurring theme throughout the book
9. Written in alternating dual POV 1st person, which is now my jam for my romance stories
10. There are two timelines in the book, but the past is told only in the prologue, the interludes, and some brief flashbacks
11. This is a workplace romance that has evolved into a second-chance holiday romance meets crime drama
12. Some chapters were written to make you cry, then sweat heavily, then cry again
13. There are some emotional triggers, so please be mindful and kindly read the Note for the Reader at the start of the book
14. There are discreet and romance cover editions of the book, and I'll be introducing variant paperback covers that are not holiday themed

From 1st Feb until Valentine's Day, I will be feat From 1st Feb until Valentine's Day, I will be featuring a different romance book daily, with 14 fun, interesting, random things about the book.

For Day 7, let's talk about my middle-grade (9+) gothic romantasy, 'Of Blood and Roses.' This book was written for younger audiences, 9 years old and above, but a lot of grown-ups will definitely enjoy this too!

14 Things about 'Of Blood and Roses' (Day 7, 14 Days of Valentine)
1. 'Wuthering Heights' is repeatedly mentioned in the book and is the female lead's favorite read
2. Released on 10th April 2025 as a birthday gift to my eldest daughter, with inspiration drawn from her favorite series: the CLAMP manga/anime 'Card Captor Sakura,' the Korean teen zombie hit 'All of Us Are Dead,' and the R.L. Stine saga 'Fear Street'
3. The male lead is a half-Filipino, half-Italian aswang boy
4. The book is set in the fictional Philippine town of Santa Rosalia, which is located fairly close to Dumangas, Iloilo in the real world
5. Written in alternating dual POV 1st person, which is not very common in middle-grade books
6. Both leads are 11 years old
7. There is a poignant historical subplot (and prologue!) of an aswang prince falling in love with a mortal woman, who was coincidentally ordained to unalive him
8. This book has some of my favorite fight scenes, armed and unarmed, that I've ever written. I also love the weaponry and the lore behind them!
9. The villains in this book are maniacally, unapologetically stylish and fashion-forward
10. This is the first book in a series of MG gothic romantasy standalones, 'Of Love and Monsters,' with each book featuring a different couple and a different creature in world monster myths
11. There are some scenes that almost push the MG boundary toward YA, because why not
12. The tropes in this book include fated mates, found family, secret royalty, coming of age, and cinnamon roll in a wolf's body
13. The book has illustrated and object variants in ebook, paperback, and hardcover
14. I really love the recurring theme said by various characters throughout: 'With my blood, my breath, my all.'
